Heart’s trained to kill, oh

The last few months have been pretty busy, contrary to what my lack of posting might suggest. However, sometimes it takes a long time for projects to see the light of day–up to several years if there’s a non-disclosure agreement, so I just have to sit on the work for awhile.

These drawings are for a little web game put together by Baker & Hill on Nationalgeographic.com about catching Great White sharks. Because everything was going to be moving around, I drew all the elements separated out– then I wasted a bunch of time in Photoshop swinging layers back and forth while making sound effects.

The Rock Band: Green Day intro/commercial is out! MK12 did a great job cramming every little bit of detail into such a short span of time. I worked on the initial storyboarding (for the final cut and also a longer, more involved story) last year, so it’s been very cool to revisit, not to mention see the final product. A ton of work went into it– in addition to MK12’s movie magic, several Kansas City graff artists’ work makes a cameo as well.

I remember working non-stop on the boards over the course of a weekend, staying up for 30-something hours; short deadlines are beyond my control, so I just kind of roll with them. Last month, I got a call from BBDO to work at FedEx for a little bit, doing some board/comps for print ads: the catch was that teams from BBDO and BBDO Guerrero were flying in from out of town (this was when the volcano was going off, so the scheduling actually got messed up) and would crank everything out in 2-3 days. While it was great to actually sit down and work with people in person, the work had to be finished extremely quickly. Finally, all that gesture drawing really paid off. It’s not often you can say “Man, my art school education really bailed me out this time!”
